Here is a short resume of 4 nights in Calcutta(kolkuta)
9th December Dinner at the Calcutta Cricket Club
Also met Raj Jolly ,Mazumdar (1959-1961) and a couple of real old seniors whose names escape me.
Tremendous food and free flowing booze. We each got a personal plaque with our names engraved.
Slept past midnight.
Arnab Sen had made arrangements at various clubs for our accommodation. Here let me say that Arnab is known as the Godfather there. He knows EVERYONE. And got some great deals.
Every evening the dinner was accompanied by a talented duo playing the violin and Synthesizer.Great live music.
10th December Tour of Arnabs School ;also memories during a tour of the Kiderpore and King Georges Area.
From there we went to a jewel of a place called the Marble palace. As usual ,Arnab knew the owner of this fabulous place with treasures from the last two centuries.
Then a real good lunch at the Ballygunge Place. ( I have never eaten so much fish)
In the evening we went to the light /sound show at the Victoria memorial.
Dinner was at the Saturday Club where we had a great time and the guys sang Happy Birthday for me …Thanks guys.
11th December River cruise of the Hoogly river with a great picnic on board the river boat till 1600.Lots of beer. Gokhale left due to earlier commitments.
In the evening we had dinner at the Bengal club (a place with a lot of history) . The dinner was continental and out of this world.
12th December was a seminar at the Master Mariners Association ,on Quality Consciousness on board ships and Arnab made Hira the chief guest with me as the guest of honour and we got flowers and a nice plaque .The speakers were very good.
In the afternoon we went to the cricket club for tea and the ladies were treated to a free beauty treatment at Arnabs Sisters Spa.
In the evening we had a great dinner at the Floatel ,a floating restaurant in the Hoogly river.
I left early morning on the 13th.
Let me say this . Arnab with Senguptas help put a fantastic show in the organization and logistics of the whole reunion . It was a pity we did not have more participation.
Arnab even got up at 0500 on the 13th to make sure I had got a taxi to the Airport (or else he was going to drive me).
So thank you once again ,Arnab and Badal.
We have planned the next reunion in February 2001 in Conoor (subject to suggestions from all).
Best Regards
